HazCom Update: SDSs and More

November 18

Master SDS requirements under OSHA’s HazCom standard to keep your workplace compliant and your employees safe.

Every hazardous chemical in your workplace comes with a Safety Data Sheet, and OSHA expects your employees to be able to find it and use it. Under the Hazard Communication Standard (HazCom), manufacturers, distributors, and importers must supply SDSs downstream. Employers must keep them readily accessible, train employees and visiting contractors on the hazards they’ll face, and provide the right PPE for the job. The information in an SDS covers exposure limits, environmental and fire precautions, and first aid, and it can prevent serious injuries or deaths.

Learning Objectives

  • You will be able to identify the key requirements of the HazCom standard.
  • You will be able to determine how to read an SDS and apply its information to safer work practices.
  • You will be able to recognize best practices for storing and updating SDSs.
  • You will be able to distinguish the SDS development, verification, and distribution obligations of manufacturers, distributors, and employers.
