Purchasing Basics for the New Buyer

February 25

Master procurement fundamentals, ethics, and value-driven buying strategies.

Individuals who are new to procurement roles may not be fully aware of the responsibilities and opportunities that come with being a buyer. The role can be high-pressure and may vary by industry, but buyers must consistently balance customer expectations with supplier capabilities while holding themselves to a higher ethical standard than others in the organization. Despite these challenges, the role can bring organizational recognition and offer career progression opportunities not often found in other professions. This course provides new buyers with an enhanced understanding of core procurement concepts and how best to leverage available technologies to support their work. The program also explains, in detail, the ethical obligations of the role and why buyers are held to a higher standard. This elevated level of responsibility brings opportunities to directly impact the organization’s bottom line, as well as deliver additional value, such as minimizing organizational risk.

Learning Objectives

  • You will be able to describe the difference between purchasing and procurement.
  • You will be able to discuss the ethical obligations of being a buyer.
  • You will be able to explain the benefits and pitfalls of electronic procurement methods.
