Understand the implications of new heavy timber construction and the new IBC rules that apply.
The recently approved changes to the 2021 International Building Code® contain new heavy timber construction types that allow for mass timber buildings at a much larger scale than what is currently permitted. This innovative approach holds the promise for significant reductions in both the amount of labor and duration of construction while using a sustainable natural resource. While the 2021 International Building Code® will not published until the fall of 2020, it is important for owners and designers to understand the implications of these new heavy timber construction types and how they might be able to seek permission in their local jurisdiction to safely construct taller mass timber structures under previous versions of the IBC.
Learning Objectives
- You will be able to define the appropriate requirements and limitations of mass timber construction in the previous versions of the International Building Code® by applying the requirements to common design applications.
- You will be able to describe the fire testing and code changes that have resulted in the new heavy timber construction types for mass timber that will appear in the 2021 International Building Code®.
- You will be able to identify the key code requirements that accompany the new heavy timber construction types in comparison to noncombustible construction methods in the 2021 International Building Code®.
- You will be able to discuss potential design scenarios for mass timber in combination with the podium construction method of the 2021 International Building Code®.
