Professional Etiquette for the Courtroom and Other Legal Situations

Learn professional etiquette for the courtroom and what may be expected of you as a legal professional. Attorneys wear numerous hats such as counselors, mediators, negotiators, advocates, and adversaries. They use persuasion to impact positive results for their clients, within the bounds of ethical conduct. They have a duty of candor to the court, they must cooperate with opposing counsel and they must exercise independent judgment and render candid advice to their client. A tall order and one fraught with pitfalls and often open to multiple interpretations. This is evident by the number of discovery disputes between counsel, complaints clients have with their counsel, how judges and their staff perceive counsel, and how juries decide case outcomes based upon counsel's presentation and courtroom demeanor. This topic will give you an overview of how the rules of procedure and the ethical rules can guide you in your practice and improve your efficacy in the courtroom, with opposing counsel and with clients. Business etiquette requires more than just knowing the rules. It requires that you, as a professional, employ them in your practice. We will also explore the consequences of how unprofessional behavior can impact the outcome of a case and your ability to practice law.
