Lethal and Nonlethal Uses of Force

August 27

Learn about the critical issues, practical techniques, and solutions to managing the complications surrounding use of force.

This topic will help you become familiar with domestic law enforcement’s long-standing schemas and models that describe the reasonableness of force engagements. The use of personal weapons like empty-hand skills, along with hand-held weapons like batons, TASER® and firearms constitute the readiness profile of a typical law enforcement officer. How these defensive devices are applied to force encounters is a matter of training, policy and law based upon the officer’s perception of threat. You will discover the affects and limitations of the entire force spectrum with a robust explanation of how it is managed through legal liability. This information provides tactical, legal and medical perspective about nonlethal and lethal use of force for law enforcement agency leaders and those who oversee or professionally interact with the criminal justice system.

Learning Objectives

  • You will be able to define lethal and nonlethal force in the context of a force transaction.
  • You will be able to discuss the historical context from which use of force rules have been promulgated within law enforcement policy and training.
  • You will be able to describe the various nonlethal and lethal techniques and weapons commonly used by law enforcement throughout the nation for the purpose of arrest, subject control and self-defense.
  • You will be able to review a use-of-force encounter and provide objective analysis as to the reasonableness of the force used.
