Oversharing: How Much is Too Much?

November 13

Identify what is and isn’t work appropriate, and more importantly, if it’s actually damaging to one’s career.

Sometimes mangers try to win co-workers trust by showing openness or being authentic, not realizing they are making people uncomfortable, are viewed as unapproachable or not interested in what’s happening to others.

Employees can find themselves feeling on the outside or not accepted without realizing that their oversharing is the barrier to better work relationships. Others just word-vomit to other people with little insight how they are viewed.

This information will teach you how to identify what opinions may cause controversy. Learn how to council peers and employees who overshare with direct, explicit feedback that breaks through emotional needs or desires that keep them from talking about the issue. When someone comes to you with their problems they trust you and many not realize they’re crossing any lines, you will be able to help them become more aware of how they are oversharing while providing a supportive and accountable environment to become more productive, reduce relationship conflicts while gaining better performance and a stronger team.

Learning Objectives

  • You will be able to define when oversharing is happening.
  • You will be able to describe topics that indicate oversharing.
  • You will be able to discuss how to stop oversharing with someone.
  • You will be able to recognize if the person who overshares is you or the other person.
