Advanced Records Retention: Developing Issues in Cybersecurity Validation and Accountability

Understand recordkeeping requirements and ways to harmonize those requirements when your organization may be subject to the rules of multiple agencies.

In the Fall of 2020, the Government Accountability Office reported that federal agencies suffered almost 60,000 cybersecurity incidents during fiscal years 2019-2020 and stated that 'clarity of leadership [is] urgently needed[.]' In response, federal cybersecurity requirements have increased for agencies and government contractors. Specific agencies also have enacted additional cybersecurity measures for organizations subject to their jurisdiction, both as guidance and now as terms for regulatory enforcement. Last year, the federal government enacted additional measures which, when finalized in regulations by the Department of Homeland Security, will have far-reaching effects on the cybersecurity practices of even more organizations. This presentation discusses specific laws and agency actions applicable to selected business operations, with a focus on recordkeeping requirements and possible sanctions for failure to maintain adequate records. Attendees will benefit from this presentation both from the examination of specific recordkeeping requirements and the discussion of ways to harmonize different requirements when an organization may be subject to the rules of multiple agencies.
