Glass Curtain Walls: Design, Engineering, and Performance

Understand the fundamentals of glass curtain wall design and explore how to balance the often-competing objectives.

Glass curtain walls are ubiquitous in contemporary building construction. Their design and specification, from standard off-the-shelf systems to highly-customized systems, requires careful understanding of curtain wall components, engineering, and performance requirements. This information will discuss fundamentals of glass curtain wall design and explore how to balance the often-competing objectives of aesthetics, water penetration and wind load resistance, building movement accommodation, solar control, thermal insulation, and condensation management, to name a few. The material will also review advanced analysis tools that facade engineers use to help design, fabricate, install, test, and assure quality for successful, long-term performance. Several case studies and project examples will also be highlighted.

Learning Objectives

  • You will be able to describe typical fabrication and installation methods of curtain walls.
  • You will be able to identify the basic components of curtain wall systems.
  • You will be able to discuss typical laboratory performance mockup and field testing of curtain walls.
  • You will be able to review the typical design, engineering, and performance requirements of curtain walls.
