Choosing and Claiming Dependents: Income Tax Benefits and Decisions

Dependent tax rules decoded, credits, filing status, and household decisions clarified.

U.S. taxpayers must comply with federal tax law, and reporting requirements depend on how each taxpayer is required to report income, both individually and based on their filing status. Many households include family members and other related individuals who cannot file a combined tax return. One example is dependents, who can be claimed by a taxpayer who provides their support. That taxpayer may be eligible for tax benefits and credits based on the cost of supporting a qualifying dependent. However, the wide range of relationships and circumstances involved makes this a confusing area for both the taxpayer and the dependent, and often means both parties need to think carefully about how to file their separate returns. This course gives participants an overview of the issues involved in identifying categories of dependents and understanding the eligibility rules for claiming related tax benefits. Examples include qualifying for head of household status, and claiming benefits based on a dependent's lower reported income. The course also covers common situations such as taxpayers living in nontraditional households, supporting parents or extended family members, or navigating separation issues caused by death or divorce. Each of these situations raises unique questions, and the course will discuss the best filing options for each.
