Understanding, Documenting and Improving Care for LGBT Patients

“The trans community is an umbrella term that includes those who identify as transgender and gender-nonconforming. Although these terms are not universal, transgender generally means those who identify as the opposite binary gender to that which they were assigned at birth, while gender-nonconforming means those who reject binary gender labels altogether. Trans individuals may wish to realize their authentic gender (i.e. the gender with which they identify) with the assistance of medical treatment, addressing what the Fourth Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) refers to as “gender identity disorder.” That trans individuals have long been considered to have a medical disorder and yet still struggle to access care speaks to their status as a vulnerable population from a public health perspective. Additionally, many other metrics used to determine vulnerability – such as poverty, social support, and discrimination – indicate that this group remains highly at risk despite the recent increase in visibility the trans identity has experienced.”
