Treasury Department Ransomware Advisories Warn that Ransom Payment May be Sanctionable

Learn how the Treasury is countering the attacks by cybercriminals.

During the COVID-19 pandemic there has been an increase in ransomware-based cyber-attacks.  Whether it encrypts computer files or locks an entire hard drive, ransomware can obstruct access to a company’s important operating data,  requiring the company to acquire a decryption key. Many times, the decryption key is only attainable by paying a ransom to the cybercriminal. This white paper reviews the recent advisories that the U.S. Department of Treasury Office of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence released that are aimed at fighting ransomware attacks and discusses how those that make the ransom payments may be sanctioned for violating Treasury law and regulations.
