ERISA protected accrued pension benefits are a think of the past.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury approved a petition from Iron Workers Local 17 Pension Fund in December 2016. The petition requested to cut benefits by an average of 20%, which was subject to a vote by the participants and beneficiaries and also put current workers in opposition with retirees. In early 2017 the results were in and the cuts were approved.
