Social Media Scrutiny on Visa Applications

Do not overlook employment and residential information.

The Department of State added new questions to Forms DS-160/DS-156 Nonimmigrant Visa Application and Form DS-260, Immigrant Visa Application. These questions instruct the foreign national to divulge social media platforms that they have used in the last five years, and to provide the username(s) for each platform. The other questions ask for the visa applicant’s current email and telephone number, as well as contact information for the previous five years. If these questions are answered with “unknown” the applicants should be prepared for the possibility of additional screening during the visa process. This white paper reviews why these questions must be answered as completely as possible and what may happen if the answers are not provided.
