There are so many different laws that provide protection, everyone is a member of at least one protected class.
In the United States, certain personal characteristics are afforded special protections under the law at both the federal and state levels. These are referred to as protected class laws. Although most frequently used within the employment law context, protected class laws and regulations are relevant to several areas outside of the employer-employee relationship. This white paper defines protected classes and reviews how the law’s definition of some protected classes differs from commonsense definitions.
