Moving Toward a Standard of Care for Medical Marijuana

 

Recent guidelines to avoid disciplinary action have been released.

These updated guidelines are in an effort to assist physicians to avoid disciplinary action related to the suggestion of cannabis to patients for medical reasons. These guidelines are set out to by the foundation for an emerging standard of care for medical cannabis. This white paper reviews these guidelines and risk management recommendations for physicians.

Ian Stewart

Lori Semlies

Wilson Elser Moskowitz Edelman & Dicker LLP

Lori Semlies, a co-chair of the firm’s Medical Malpractice & Health Care practice, focuses on the defense of medical and nursing home malpractice claims in state and federal courts, including all phases of litigation through trial. She has handled appeals in the New York Appellate Division, First and Second Departments, and before the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.

As part of her risk management services for clients, Lori frequently lectures at conferences across the country on best practices in documentation in a medical institution. She also assists clients with drafting admission agreements and protocols and helps them manage crisis situations. Lori writes for Wilson Elser’s blog “Professional Liability Advocate,” available on the firm’s website.

Lori currently serves as a member of the steering committee of Wilson Elser’s Women Attorneys Valued & Empowered (WAVE) initiative, which exemplifies the firm’s enlightened approach to advancing the professional and personal well-being of its women attorneys.

Jordan W. Montet

Wilson Elser Moskowitz Edelman & Dicker LLP

Jordan Montet handles a wide range of civil litigation cases, including medical malpractice defense and labor and employment matters. Prior to working at Wilson Elser, Jordan represented companies in the defense of employment discrimination and wage-and-hour class actions. She also defended heath care entities, providing litigation and advisement related to tort claims and contract disputes. While in law school, Jordan served two years as a graduate research assistant and completed a judicial clerkship with Presiding Justice P. Harris Hines of the Georgia Supreme Court.
