Don’t Let a Certificate of Insurance (COI) Get You in Trouble

Often called the most dangerous document used in business today. It is a document that has a list of promises and then with a statement similar to the following says that the promises are untrue:

"THIS CERTIFICATE IS ISSUED AS A MATTER OF INFORMATION ONLY AND CONFERS NO RIGHTS ON THE CERTIFICATE HOLDER. THIS CERTIFICATE DOES NOT AMEND, EXTEND OR ALTER THE COVERAGE REPORTED BY THE POLICIES DESCRIBED BELOW."

This nefarious document affects many industries - it is the Certificate of Insurance (COI). Attorneys in the insurance field continue to come across stunning instances in construction and other industries where the Certificate of Insurance is incorrectly applied. This creates headaches of indeterminable length and breathtaking risk.
