American psychologist Herbert Freudenberger, in describing what was happening amongst doctors and nurses in 1974, defined ‘burnout’ as “the extinction of motivation or incentive, especially where one's devotion to a cause or relationship fails to produce the desired results.” Almost 40 years later burnout has expanded into every workplace and there is no accepted definition or diagnosis. We miss a huge opportunity by seeing our employees only as company assets to be leveraged. Every human has a purpose on earth and when they connect to it, burn out is never a factor.
