FMLA Leave Issues: Get Value From the Recertification Process

Learn how you can get value out of the recertification process.

For certification of an FMLA leave employers should require a certification from the health care provider at the outset of the leave and request a new certification if question arises about the appropriateness or length of the leave. Recertification for FMLA absences should not be requested before the period specified on the original certification form; or more frequently than every 30 days unless there is a change in circumstances or new information casts doubt upon the validity of the original certification and the employer must pay for it. This video reviews the timing of the recertification request, provides examples of reasons to doubt, and discusses the importance of gathering proof before denying FMLA leave.
