Creating Safety Nets and Safe Places in Delegation to Ensure Success and How to Deal With Failure

Creating delegation "safety nets” and "safe places" will ensure success for your associates. Establish a concept that this experience is to develop the individual. Delegation does not mean abandonment. At first, stay close to activity and monitor progress closely. Then slowly allow for expanded independence. Be prepared for missteps, dis‐engagement, and complete failure. However, in each case, remain invested in the delegation and see the delegation through. Avoid abandoning and taking over. Become and remain the role of the coach and not the player. Keep the delegation in place until completion and step in only when absolutely necessary.

In this 8-minute video our speaker, Rick Baron, SPHR, CPC, reviews the importance of providing feedback, encouragement, and constructive criticism. He also discusses when to stop the delegation and what to do afterwards. Mr. Baron recommends using the root cause analysis process when dealing with mistakes.
