EEOC interprets and enforces sex discrimination protections from Title VII as forbidding employment discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation. EEOC says these protections apply regardless of contrary state or local laws. In 2016, the EEOC resolved 1,650 charges filed by LGBT individuals who filed sex discrimination charges.
