Reducing Harm of Concussion for Young Athletes: Methods and Policies

 
Sports-related concussion among school-aged athletes has emerged as a major public health issue over the past several years. Not only does concussion affect a young athlete’s physical wellbeing for a period of time, but it also has a significant effect upon the student's ability to learn and function in a classroom environment. This on-demand webinar will focus on the provisions and implementation of state laws passed in 49 states and the District of Columbia, including so-called return-to-learn requirements, as well as methods used in returning students who have suffered a concussion back into the learning environment. The on-demand webinar will also help coaches, teachers and administrators in recognizing when a student has suffered a concussion and what steps they can take in ensuring a safe and successful return to academics and athletics. Finally, you will learn the importance of having specific policies and procedures in place for safe and effective management of all students and athletes who have suffered a concussion, and will consider some potential legal issues associated with return-to-learn policies.

  • Provides legal technical assistance to a number of organizations on TBI and other injury prevention laws, including the Children’s Safety Network, the Massachusetts Athletic Trainers Association, the Northeast and Caribbean Injury Prevention Network, and various state departments of health and education
  • Former Cancer Prevention Fellow and Cancer Research Training Award Fellow at the National Cancer Institute
  • Writer/co-writer of three peer-reviewed publications on public health laws, as well as a paper on implementation of youth sports concussion laws that is currently under review
  • Memberships include the Law Section of the American Public Health Association (program chair, 2011 to 2015); American Society of Law, Medicine, & Ethics; University of Maryland Working Group on Sports Injury Prevention, 2012; Safe States Alliance (policy committee 2013, 2014)
