New Jersey, like many other jurisdictions, has state unclaimed property laws that require holders of unclaimed property to report and turnover that property to the state. If your company has customers, vendors, employees, or counterparties, you may be in possession of unclaimed property. These laws apply to uncashed checks, unclaimed credit balances, dormant account balances, unused gift certificates and many more items. This topic will help those professionals responsible for unclaimed property law compliance to identify potential unclaimed property, learn what steps a company in possession of unclaimed property must take, and how to report and remit that property to the state. Failure to comply with unclaimed property laws may subject a company to audits, interest assessments, and/or penalties for noncompliance.
