Indiana Property Tax Update

 
Gain a better understanding of the Indiana property tax assessment process including how it has changed due to recent legislation.The Indiana property tax system is unique, complex and challenging. This topic provides an update on key features of the Indiana property tax system including its valuation standard of true tax value, how it is defined, and competing interpretations of the definition. The topic will also review recent legislative tweaks and Tax Court rulings and how they affect assessments, appeals and tax liabilities. Changes in assessment and filing dates will be discussed as well as changes in exemptions and abatements so that taxpayers and practitioners can take advantage of greater benefits now available to certain types of property. The topic will help tax professionals understand how their properties are affected by the change from statewide general reassessment to cyclical reassessment with annual trending. A review of statutorily prescribed assessment methodologies by property type will be presented to facilitate a better understanding of the basis of assessment and whether an appeal is warranted, and, if so, on what grounds. Finally, an update on the latest valuation controversy will be provided including where the battle lines are drawn.
