Hazards of Excavation

Know what OSHA inspectors look for when conducting an excavation inspection and common pitfalls to avoid.

Excavations and trenches have become so commonplace on work sites that some employers and employees have developed a sense of complacency with some of the most basic requirements of excavation safety. To counter this, OSHA initiated a National Emphasis Program on trenching and excavation to increase its education and enforcement efforts regarding these operations.
This material will help employers involved in excavations understand the requirements of OSHA's subpart P dealing with excavation. Furthermore, the program will review what OSHA inspectors look for when conducting an excavation inspection and will examine the pitfalls that most employers fall into when performing excavation work.
