Effective Questioning and Listening Techniques


Develop practical techniques to become more effective in building relationships, solving problems, ensuring understanding, and resolving conflicts.

Challenging, engaging, and effective questioning stimulates discussions and encourages organizations to explore and refine their understanding of issues, problem-solving, and decision-making processes. The ability to effectively question is a skill that can enhance engagement, creativity, and learning. Emphasis should be on using questions that are open-ended and require a higher order of cognitive skills. Effective questioning involves using questions that open conversations, inspire deeper intellectual thought, and promote team interaction. Effective questions focus on eliciting the process - the how and why - as opposed to answers that detail the "what". Learning how to ask questions can improve your communication skills and develop positive relationships with your colleagues, clients, and other professionals in your network. Asking the right questions can also help you gather important information, learn new things, and develop productive solutions.
Another important communication competence is effective listening. Listening includes complex cognitive processes like understanding and interpreting messages. It includes responding with both verbal and nonverbal feedback. Good listening skills also include focusing and paying attention to the information that is being transmitted to you. To be an effective listener, you must take into consideration what is being said in concert with how you are feeling about what is being communicated, the context of the message, and how you will react to what you have heard.
