Do You Need SHRM-CP Courses or Training?
HR, administrative and management professionals have a crucial role to play in workplaces. The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is the largest professional organization offering certification for these fields and for professionals who are midcareer in these areas. Although certification is voluntary, it can help professionals get ahead in business, qualify for more senior positions and stand out in a field that is increasingly competitive.
Getting SHRM-CP Certification
In order to secure certification, professionals must first be eligible by getting the correct education and by working an adequate number of years in management, HR or administrative fields. They must also pass an exam to prove their knowledge. SHRM further requires professionals to participate in continuing education in order to maintain certification.
SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) certification is available to those who have at least three years in an HR role if they studied in an HR program, or four years in a role in the field if they did not study in an HR program. Professionals who have at least a bachelor’s degree may need only one or two years in their role to qualify, while those with graduate degrees may need one year in a HR role — if their degree was not in HR — or need to be currently in an HR job — if they studied HR in a degree program — to qualify for certification.
Once you qualify and take the test, you must secure re-certification to continue to enjoy the benefits. To do this, you must take 60 hours of SHRM-CP courses every three years or re-take the exam. Many professionals find it easier to secure the 60 hours rather than re-take the exam, but studying for hours can be challenging as well. For many, taking SHRM-CP credits online allows for a more convenient way of studying to fulfill SHRM requirements.
