The American Institute of Certified Planners’ (AICP) Certified Environmental Planner (CEP) credential was designed specifically to address this need. CEP certification is reserved for individuals who have demonstrated in-depth knowledge, experience and leadership skills in all aspects of environmental planning. Professionals who achieve CEP certification will be better positioned to manage risk and advance their careers in this in-demand field.
Becoming CEP Certified
CEP certification is open to all AICP members with at least eight years of experience in environmental planning. In order to sit for the exam, you must first complete three essay questions to demonstrate your experience and expertise. The exam itself is held several times a year and covers the following topics:
- Natural Systems Analytic Framework
- Integrating Environmental Planning into Community / Comprehensive Planning
- Performance Measurement
- Environmental Planning Practices
Planners who successfully complete the exam earn the right to use the CEP designation on all official correspondence for a period of two years.
Keeping Your Certification Valid
In order to remain a CEP-certified member of the AICP, planners are required to complete 32 credit hours of continuing education training every two-year renewal period. This can be earned through any combination of approved live or self-study training, although a minimum of 1.5 credits must cover a topic related to professional ethics.
