Structural Design Considerations: Construction Materials

Proper selection of materials involves more than just strength; learn about serviceability issues that impact the service life of the materials.

The most common construction materials are wood, brick and concrete masonry, cast-in-place concrete, and structural steel. Most architects and civil engineers have specific courses in strength design of these materials in their college training. But the real construction world contains many variants on these materials like engineered wood products, thin veneer masonry, precast concrete, and light-gage metal framing. In addition, more expensive structural materials have become more common including, aluminum, stainless steel, and glass. And, the proper selection of all these materials involves more than an understanding of strength as serviceability issues like decay resistance, corrosion resistance, fire resistance, sustainability, etc. impact the service life of the components made of these materials.
