Determining Indirect Rates in Government Contracts

The federal government may be the only customer that you have that you must provide a cost break out of the elements of cost and pricing in order to be awarded a contract. Labor costs, material costs, travel, subcontractors are direct costs that you may readily be able to estimate for work to be provided. However, the government requires, in accordance with FAR Part 31, that the indirect costs (overhead, general and administrative, etc.) also be disclosed. Additionally, those costs must be estimated, allocated and reported consistently and in accordance with the requirements of the FAR. Make sure that you are not defectively pricing, underestimating or not being as competitive as you should be by gaining some insight into methodologies that meet all of your needs.

Learning Objectives:

  • You will be able to review Federal Acquisition Regulation Part 31.
  • You will be able to discuss determining a rate structure that is compliant, competitive and profitable.
  • You will be able to explain causal beneficial relationships.
  • You will be able to discuss making changes and remaining consistent.
