Alternatives to Traditional Backfill Materials

Many times in doing a geotechnical engineering design a geotechnical engineer will encounter problem soils that in the past would have required complex, expensive solutions to solve in order to build the project. In the last 20 - 25 years the use of geosynthetics products have enabled the designer to develop a design that not only enables the project to be built, but at a less expensive investment from both an initial cost and a life cycle cost. One of the more recent geosynthetics that have met this need is the development and use of geofoam as an alternative lightweight backfill material. The ASTM International Committee D35 on Geosynthetics defines geofoam as a block or rigid cellular foamed polymeric material used in geotechnical engineering applications. This on-demand webinar will review the types of conditions that require lightweight backfill material, a review of geofoam, its properties, and testing. An example specification will be presented, followed by examples of where the material has been successfully used.

  • Executive director, North American Geosynthetics Society
  • As supervisor of the soil mechanics laboratory he oversaw the performance of all foundation design testing done in conjunction with the departments $1 billion design and construction program, this included strength, consolidation, permeability and model testing
  • Also oversaw the department's geosynthetic acceptance and quality assurance process, this included testing and evaluating of geosynthetic products for strength, water flow and soil retention characteristics
  • September 1968 to May 2005 (retired) – NYSDOT Geotechnical Engineering Bureau
  • Currently instructor team member for the National Highway Institute “Designing with Geosynthetics” Course
  • Adjunct professor, Rensselear Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York; “Designing with Geosynthetics”, Spring 2006 and Spring 2009 terms
  • Has written and spoken on many topics related to his areas of expertise

  • ASTM International Committee D18 on Soil and Rock, June 2013 recipient of the A. Ivan Johnson Achievement Award, the highest D18 Committee award, for work as the senior co-editor of the ASTM International Geostechnical Testing Journal
