The Rising Cost of Commuting: Developing a Transportation Benefits Plan

Help your wallet, help your employee's wallets and help your nation address a continuing problem … the multifaceted, rising cost of commuting.

Steadily increasing gasoline prices are taking a larger share of household income and relief does not appear to be on the near horizon. This situation is complicated by increasing commute distances and commute times each work day. There are things you can do at the local level, to improve your personal commuting situation, to assist your fellow employees in improving their commuting situation, and to contribute to the lowering of your overall tax burden for a wide variety of government services.

Throughout the country, businesses and employees alike are taking advantage of a federal law designed to encourage the use of alternative forms of transportation. Section 123(f) of federal tax law allows employees to reduce their commuting costs by up to 40%, while helping employers save 10% or more on payroll taxes. Employers use tax free dollars (subject to monthly limits) to pay for their commuting expenses, while you can provide this benefit to your employees as a substitute for taxable salary, as a supplemental benefit, or as a combination of the two.
