Value Stream Mapping

Value stream mapping is a visualization tool that helps to visualize, understand and streamline work processes using the tools and techniques of lean manufacturing. Value stream mapping and other mapping techniques put a spotlight on waste, streamline work processes, promote deep understanding and build consensus for improvement.

Most business organizations are enormously complex. Only visuals convey enough information to understand the pieces, relationships, hidden waste and time-domain behavior. Mapping for visualization promotes a deep understanding and brings major breakthroughs in productivity and performance. It leads to consensus on systemic problems and remedies. While finished maps communicate information about a situation, the real value is the mapping itself. This is where insights grow, paradigms shift and consensus builds.

Learning Objectives:

  • You will be able to describe value and waste.
  • You will be able to discuss how to map the present state.
  • You will be able to review implementation planning.
  • You will be able to identify the limits of mapping.

Quarterman Lee

Strategos, Inc.

Quarterman Lee has been a trusted advisor to clients across many industries and in many countries for more than 30 years. He has also been a plant manager, maintenance superintendant and design engineer. His early employment included Ford Motor Company, Boeing, Crown-Zellerbach and Atchison Casting. As maintenance superintendant for a large steel foundry, Mr. Lee introduced reliability concepts and other elements of what is now called total productive maintenance. This brought order-of-magnitude reductions in downtime and enabled the foundry to expand output. As a plant manager for a window manufacturer, he employed the same techniques on a smaller scale.

A turning point in Mr. Lee's career came in 1983 when he participated in a study mission to Japan. What he saw at Nissan, Sony, Toyota and other Japanese factories was the precursor to lean manufacturing. Lean manufacturing and TPM have since become a major thrust of his professional efforts. Mr. Lee has also found time for more traditional engineering work. He designed structures and mechanisms for the F4 Phantom, industrial electric and ventilation systems, specialized machinery and a patented commercial dishwasher.

Mr. Lee holds a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University. He is a member of the Institute of Industrial Engineers, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and the APICS. Mr. Lee has authored or co-authored five books, hundreds of professional articles and several dozen training programs.
