Managing a Union: Strategies for Success

Gain a better understanding of how to recognize strategies for success with decision making and negotiations to meet satisfaction.

Employers with unionized workforces often struggle to effectively manage the situation. This struggle is sometimes caused because the union is a fairly new phenomenon, having recently been voted in by the employees. Other times, the employer and union have a mature relationship but the relationship is plagued with disputes. No matter the situation, most human resources managers and frontline supervisors know just enough information about working in a unionized environment to get by, but they have many informational blind spots. These gaps in knowledge prevent a productive relationship and can give rise to unnecessary disputes in the form of grievances, clashes with the union, and unfair labor practice charges. These employers agonize over the circumstances under which they can make workplace decisions unilaterally and when they must bargain, when to involve the union, how to communicate with the union and how to manage the grievance process. This material helps people responsible for direct relations with the union, whether they are human resources and labor relations professionals or operations managers and supervisors, understand the framework for union management relations, including the law, their respective roles strategies for effectively administering the contract and for handling grievances. The topic will discuss how the employer can be confident in its decision-making, how to make changes during the term of a labor contract, and how to bring the process of negotiation to a satisfactory conclusion.
