Breaking Down the Supreme Court's Health Care Ruling

Ever since President Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (commonly known as "Obamacare"), the nation has been embroiled not just in a political debate of the legislation's merits, but in a constitutional one on whether the federal government even has the power to enact certain parts of it. Central to the lawsuits challenging Obamacare is the "individual mandate," the unprecedented requirement that virtually all individuals buy health insurance or pay a fine. With lower courts split, the Supreme Court took up the case, National Federation of Independent Businesses v. Sebelius, hearing an historic six hours of oral arguments over three days this past March.

The Court ruled on June 28, and this OnDemand Webinar will analyze that ruling. What is the scope of federal power to tax and to regulate interstate commerce? What kinds of strings can the federal government attach to funds it offers the states? Are any other federal laws affected by the ruling? This program will break down the justices' opinions to clarify the new doctrinal and practical realities following this monumental case.
