This course takes existing Power BI users beyond the basics, covering two powerful ways to add calculated data to your reports: creating custom columns in the Power Query Editor, and writing measures using DAX. In the first part, participants will learn how to build new columns directly within the Power Query interface using tools like conditional columns, columns from examples, and simple custom column formulas, all without needing to write M code from scratch. In the second part, the session moves into DAX, where participants will progress from basic aggregations to writing measures that are dynamic, context-aware, and ready for any report layout. Throughout, the focus is on practical techniques that can be applied immediately in the workplace.
Learning Objectives
- You will be able to explain how the Power Query Editor to add new calculated columns to a dataset using the graphical interface.
- You will be able to Create conditional columns, columns from examples, and basic custom columns without writing M code manually.
- You will be able to explain the difference between calculated columns and measures, and know when to use each.
