Trends in Building Enclosure Design, Delivering High-Performance Buildings

Heightened performance is the single most driving trend in the building construction industry.

Expectations from owners and society regarding the performance of buildings are on the rise. The building enclosure is the single biggest determinate of building energy consumption and therefore drives building performance. Litigation and numerous failures have also lead to increasing pressures for the constructed building to meet or exceed performance criteria established in the design phases. This course establishes the heightened performance demands on the building enclosure, demonstrates scientific design tools to predict performance and provides quality assurance/quality control strategies to verify that the final building performances as expected. How both new and existing materials can be used in high-performance enclosure assemblies will be explained. Critical areas for detailing will be highlighted.   • East Coast director for The Facade Group LLC, a consulting firm specializing in assisting owners, architects and builders in the delivery of durable and highly performing building enclosures
  • Prior to joining TFC, he was technical design principal for a 1,000 person international architecture firm
  • Primary responsibilities include technical support to various design principals and project teams along with oversight and quality assurance for all aspects of architectural practice including the design, detailing and administration of the construction for projects totaling over a billion dollars each year
  • Active in the architectural community at several levels, focusing primarily on reinforcing the architect’s role in building science and tectonic integrated design
  • Helped form the national AIA/NIBS Building Enclosure Council initiative and continues on as the co-chair of the National BEC Committee
  • Member of the National AIA Advisory Board for the 11th Edition of Architectural Graphic Standards and was subject editor for the chapter on superstructure and enclosure
  • Serves on the board of directors for the Building Energy and Thermal Envelope Council of the National Institute of Building Science
