Reading and Understanding Construction Plans

February 25

Gain an understanding of drawings and related information so you may better interpret the drawings to provide a roadmap to your construction project.

Construction plans generally consist of two-dimensional drawings that show how a structure should be built. The ability to read construction plans touches a myriad of jobs that interact with the construction process. These jobs include building department and local government employees that review plans to issue permits; planners that estimate building materials and labor costs; those involved in the pre-construction planning a0nd scheduling phase; and contractors who use the plans to create work breakdowns, develop means and methods, and construct the project. As the buildings and systems within them become increasingly complex, so have the drawings that describe the details of a particular project. But whether a simple residence or a large commercial building, similar basic understandings of drawings and related information can aid in interpreting and navigating those drawings to provide a roadmap to the construction.

This program will help those required to review plans for various information to learn the generally accepted order of drawings in a set of plans and how to navigate the plans to identify construction details and requirements set forth in the drawings. Become more acquainted with the jargon used to identify particular aspects of drawings, details, sections, elevations, and commonly used abbreviations and symbols which represent components of the completed structure.Learn standard ways to handle ambiguities in construction drawings, how drawings may be modified during the construction process, and the effect of those modifications.

Learning Objectives

  • You will be able to describe ambiguities in the plans and provide notice to receive instructions as to the identified ambiguities in the plans.
  • You will be able to identify the various sets of drawings that may be issued for a project.
  • You will be able to recognize the typical order of drawings in a set of plans.
  • You will be able to review construction documents that may provide changes to the plans.
