Turn fire codes into safer building solutions.
Control of fire by construction is a critical element of managing a fire incident in our overall fire safety objectives for the built environment. Confining or containing the fire through fire-resistance rated construction ensures that smoke and flame do not migrate outside the compartment of fire origin and impact occupants who are not intimate with ignition. This course will provide an introduction to fire-resistance rated construction as described in the International Building Code (IBC), including types of assembles and their application. The presentation will also review methodologies for determining fire-resistance as well as design and installation considerations for fire-resistance rated assemblies. Finally, case studies will be presented to provide practical examples of fire-resistance rated assemblies as they are applied in the field. This course will provide attendees with an understanding of the role of fire-resistance rated assemblies in construction and the applicable IBC code provisions.
Learning Objectives
- You will be able to identify the purpose and role of fire-resistance-rated assemblies within the International Building Code (IBC) Chapter 7 framework.
- You will be able to define and differentiate between key types of fire-resistance-rated assemblies, including fire walls, fire barriers, fire partitions, and smoke barriers.
- You will be able to compare the primary methodologies used to determine fire-resistance ratings, including fire resistance testing, prescriptive methods, and calculated approaches.
- You will be able to recognize the requirements for design, installation, and protection of fire-resistance-rated assemblies, including openings, penetrations, and listing resources.
