The Legal Framework of HIPAA

What is protected by HIPAA?

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act became public law in 1996 and is overseen by the Department of Health & Human Services and enforced by Office for Civil Rights. HIPAA guides regulations on privacy of health information, security of health information, notification of breaches of confidentiality, and penalties for violating HIPAA. This video reviews a summary of HIPAA and discusses what HIPAA protects.
