This information will provide direction and recommendations as to persons who can and may serve as a Special Inspector (SI). The positive benefits of having an SI on a construction project as well as the authority/responsibility of an SI will be identified for owners and public officials charged with building code compliance and life safety. How the decision is made to have or require an SI by the authority having jurisdiction and/or the developer owner- end user is addressed. The authority of an SI is outlined together with the responsibilities and liabilities associated with this service. Industry standards, state statutes, and legal requirements are presented as well as the history of the SI concept.
