Stormwater BMPs and LID for Cold Climates

This OnDemand Webinar will cover the cold climate functionality of various types of storm water management systems.

Lack of widespread adoption of low-impact development (LID) designs in northern climates is in large part due to concerns about poor winter performance relating to frozen filter media; and dormant biological functions. This program will address the cold climate functionality of storm water BMPs and variations with the respect to both water quality and hydrologic functionality of LID designs, in contrast with conventional best-management practices BMPs and manufactured systems illustrate that seasonal functionality was evident for many systems; however, the LID designs are consistently top storm water management performers. Items to be discussed will include: filter media frost penetration, hydraulic efficiency, and seasonal variations of contaminant removal efficiency. System types to examined are bioretention systems, a subsurface gravel wetland, a street tree, porous asphalt, swales, a retention pond, hydrodynamic separators, and a subsurface infiltration system. Seasonal performance evaluations indicate that LID filtration designs differ minimally from summer to winter. A brief review of case studies will be presented. Learning Objectives: •You will be able to discuss water quality functionality. •You will be able to identify frost penetration and LID filtration systems. •You will be able to explain cold climate and maintenance design considerations. •You will be able to review porous pavements and winter maintenance.
