Becoming a fellow of the prestigious National Tax Practice Institute (NTPI) is one of the highest achievements available for enrolled agents. NTPI Fellows have undergone a rigorous course of training and certification, and they are among an elite class of professionals representing clients before the IRS.
For many experienced enrolled agents, becoming an NTPI Fellow is a major accomplishment that will take their career to the next level. If you're considering applying to become an NTPI Fellow or have just been accepted into the institute, read on to learn more.
Becoming a Fellow
Fellowship in the NTPI is open to any enrolled agent, tax attorney or CPA who has demonstrated expertise in the US tax code and in-depth knowledge of the procedures and policies of the broader tax system. This is demonstrated through a three-tiered testing program:
- Level 1 testing, taken online
- Level 2 testing, taken at either the August NAEA National Conference or the November NTPI Conference
- Level 3 testing, taken at the November NTPI Conferenc
Most candidates take three years to complete the program, though it is possible to become a fellow in less time. Once completed, you are allowed to use the NTPI Fellow designation on all official correspondence, signifying that you have attained one of the highest levels of certification in your profession.
In order to remain an NTFI Fellow, you need to keep your NAEA registration valid. To do this, you’ll need to complete 30 hours of approved continuing education, including 2.0 hours of ethics training.
