California Landlord and Tenant Law Update

February 22

Are you up-to-date on the latest issues impacting California landlord and tenant law?

Given the surge in value of California real estate, including possessory interests, California landlord-tenant law has become more important than ever before. In addition, given the increasing cost of housing statewide, residential rent and eviction controls are now expanding from coastal cities to other parts of the state, bringing their notorious complexities with them. While the Legislature consistently develops relevant statutory law, the courts in California now annually publish numerous decisions involving many different aspects of the landlord-tenant relationship. Knowledge of these decisions is important for anyone who practices in this area of law. This topic will analyze and discuss case law developments in California landlord-tenant law in 2017. It will identify issues decided by the courts in 2017, and suggest practical solutions where available. This content will greatly educate any attorney, manager, owner, or professional about the kinds of issues and problems that practitioners face, and which judges decide, concerning California landlord-tenant law.

Learning Objectives

- You will be able to describe all issues concerning landlord-tenant law which have been the subject matter of published decisions in California in 2017.

- You will be able to recognize the details of recent published case law interpreting and enforcing the litigation privilege (Civil Code § 47) specifically in the landlord-tenant context.

- You will be able to discuss the issues in landlord-tenant law which will have recently received the attention of the California Supreme Court.
