California Medical Records Law

Understand the laws that govern medical records in California to stay compliant and minimize legal risks. The privacy of individually identifiable health information is integral to patient care and the practice of health information management. In addition to the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), California has several state laws governing health information privacy, such as the Confidentiality of Medical Information Act, California Patient Access to Health Records Act and the Lanterman-Petris-Short Act. In addition, California has its own breach notification laws. Failure to comply with these laws can have serious consequences, including financial penalties and reputational harm. Gain a clear understanding of how these different laws apply to your organization, and what additional steps you should be taking to ensure compliance with California law.
