The Long Distance Leader: Strategies for Leaders Separated From Their Team by Location and Time Zones

March 19

Still be engaging, helpful and direct. Effectively lead your team while you're remote and watch productivity soar.

The reality of the working world today and for the life of a leader is that all of those you lead likely won't be down the hall or in the next cubicle. Each day technologies allow more people to lead teams far from where they are, or even for people to work from home one or more days a week. While there are realities to this situation and even opportunities gained from it, there are tremendous productivity and leadership challenges caused by this fact. This topic will help any leader navigate these challenges more successfully. We will outline the biggest challenges and systematically talk about how to overcome them, and even take advantage of the opportunities remote teams offer us. If you lead a team remotely, or expect that you will in the future, this topic will help you be more successful in building your team, developing your people and creating the results needed by your team. Led by leadership expert Kevin Eikenberry, this topic will leave you with new skills and the confidence to use those new skills.

Learning Objectives

- You will be able to define at least three ways to improve relationships remotely between your team members and you.

- You will be able to describe the biggest challenges remote leaders face.

- You will be able to discuss the pros and cons of at least three remote communication tools.

- You will be able to explain at least five specific tactics that will reduce the anxiety of remote employees.

Discover how to build, develop and manage your remote team and overcome obstacles to maximize productivity.

Learning Objectives

Completion of our “How to Lead Remotely” training program will help you achieve the following objectives:

- You will be able to overcome the communication challenges that accompany a remote work environment

- You will learn how to foster stronger, more productive relationships with each member of your team

- You will discover methods for developing and motivating your remote staff

- You will be able to facilitate collaboration through the efficient coordination of the activities of individual workers

What Are the Challenges That Come With Leading Remote Teams?

Leading remotely is much different than managing a team of in-house employees. Examples of the many challenges when leading remote teams include:

  • Communications

Communicating with people is not the same as managing them in person. It’s more difficult to establish a rapport with someone you only speak with over the phone, via Skype feeds, or in writing through emails or text messages. While using technology to communicate offers the advantage of convenience, the meaning of messages is sometimes “lost in transmission.” You also have a hard time discerning non-verbal communication cues that can be just as important as the subject matter.

  • Collaboration

Effective collaboration is an essential ingredient for success in a team setting, especially in a project-oriented environment. It can be a challenge to coordinate the efforts of all team members when leading remotely, especially when workers are scattered across multiple time zones.

While the Internet and various forms of digital technology can facilitate collaboration, they cannot replicate all the benefits of having everyone gathered in an office or conference room at the same time. For instance, you may not experience the same personal interaction that serves as a stimulus for innovation and creativity during brainstorming sessions.

  • Structure

Establishing and maintaining a sound operating structure can be problematic when leading remote teams. Without the rules, constraints and close supervision that exist in the typical on-site work environment, staff members are more likely to employ their own work methods.

While working independently often brings out the best in remote employees, it can make it more challenging to keep everyone on the same page. As a remote manager, you must ensure that your workers are completing their tasks and that they have access to all the tools, resources and help they need to succeed.

  • Culture

It’s much easier to establish and maintain a strong organizational culture when everyone is in-house. Unfortunately, it’s not so easy to convey corporate values and cultural norms via the telephone or computer.

Remote team leaders must find ways to incorporate the organization’s mission statement, code of conduct and guidelines for expected behavior into their communication procedures. It may even be necessary to hold in-person training sessions or travel to visit workers on occasion to emphasize and reiterate the organization’s cultural values.

  • Motivation

While most virtual employees enjoy the independence that working remotely provides, the absence of coworkers and the stimulation of the office environment can make them feel isolated at times.

A critical task when leading remote teams is finding ways to keep your staff motivated and productive. You might need to make regular phone calls to let your team members know that their efforts are appreciated and valued. It also gives them the opportunity to use you as a sounding board and to update you on the progress of their projects and tasks.

  • Training

The training of remote employees must be conducted differently than for in-house staff. Although it may be possible to gather everyone at one location for in-person training sessions, the expense can make this cost-prohibitive for anything other than occasional meetings. The bulk of the training will likely consist of methods such as webinars and online courses. Thus, it will be challenging to provide the “personal touch” and feedback that is essential for ensuring the success of training initiatives.
