Construction Job Costing Methods and Techniques

One of the most important tools available is the job cost report - make sure your report is created properly and used effectively.

Many contracts today contain language that allows an owner to audit a contractor's records. This provides owners with a tool to 'keep a contractor honest' when it comes to change orders and claims. Of increasing concern to many contractors are the Federal False Claims Act and similar laws in various states. A contractor that cannot clearly demonstrate its cost accounting will have problems that will take time to resolve without a good Job Cost Report (JCR). This topic will help those who maintain and use JCRs understand how these are vital for audits and for managing projects. Obtaining accurate information from the field and from purchasing, organizing a JCR to be a reflection of the work that is actually being performed, and ensuring the JCR is understandable to anyone who reviews it requires a diligent effort. This material is designed to drive home the overall importance of an accurate, up-to-date JCR.
