Helical Piles: History, Design and Applications

Hear a few practical case histories about helical piles, and learn how you can utilize them in your next engineering project.

Helical piles are an alternative deep foundation and anchoring system used for support of residential and commercial structures, oil and gas equipment, solar panels, and a number of other projects. Helical piles were adopted into the International Building Code in 2009. Today, there are over 50 helical - pile manufacturing companies in at least 12 countries on four continents. There may be more than 2,000 helical - pile installation contractors in the United States alone. In the past, helical piles were an interesting alternative that some geotechnical engineers would take into consideration in special cases. Now, helical piles are becoming well known by most practicing engineers and architects. This timely topic is an advanced look into the history, design and applications of helical piles. You will gain a better understanding of how to properly size a helical pile as well as how and when to take into account corrosion, buckling, lateral capacity, downdrag and bracing. Includes a few practical case histories.
