Benefits

Due to drought, climate change, groundwater over-drafting and sheer population increase, pressure is on developers and builders to conserve water in new developments. The focus for such conservation is on the landscape, which currently uses about half of all urban water. This teleconference will teach you what greywater really is, all the environmental and financial benefits of reusing it, how to legally capture and irrigate with it, and how to obtain matching federal funds for greywater irrigation systems.

Learning Objectives

  • You will be able to describe major benefits of reuse.
  • You will be able to identify funding at the local, state and federal level.
  • You will be able to discuss greywater legal and technical criteria.
  • You will be able to recognize LEED® points.

Faculty

Steven Bilson, ReWater Systems, Inc.

Stephen Bilson
  • Established ReWater Systems, Inc., in 1990 and runs their operations from San Diego
  • ReWater is the nation’s largest manufacturer of legal greywater irrigation systems
  • Invented the greywater irrigation system on which he now holds US Patent #5,217,323; this system uses a unique underground drip emitter made especially for greywater and has a special controller for automatic filter cleaning and irrigation functions
  • Consultant for ultra high-end residential, commercial, LEED®, civilian and military projects; has been an expert witness in greywater irrigation cases; and has written several articles on greywater irrigation for publications as diverse as The High Sierran and P&M Engineering
  • In 1992, he sponsored California Assembly Bill #3518 legalizing single family dwelling greywater systems; and in 1995, he sponsored Assembly Bill #313 for multifamily, commercial and industrial systems, and then helped other states with their codes
  • In 2007, he helped sponsor California’s SB1258 to substantially revise their state code which went into effect on August 4, 2009
  • His greywater irrigation systems have been sold extensively in California and throughout the United States
  • Due to their water reuse, irrigation efficiency, wastewater reduction, nonpoint source pollution prevention and energy reduction benefits, ReWater’s systems were the first privately owned and operated water reuse systems determined to be cost effective enough to pay for themselves through low-interest US EPA State Revolving Funds previously thought reserved only for municipally-owned capital improvement projects
  • ReWater’s systems can earn up to 12 LEED® points, and are by far the most cost effective LEED® points on a project
  • B.A. degree, California State University, Sacramento
  • After graduating, he worked several years for various federal agencies
