Understanding Metadata in the Practice of Law

Metadata could be of little to no use, or it could be vital to a legal issue.

Metadata is embedded information in electronic documents that is generally hidden from view in a printed copy of a document. Metadata is generated when documents are created, revised, reviewed or otherwise handled electronically. In essence, it is everything about an electronic document other than the document’s contents and is not apparent from the face of the document but can be mined by those who know how from the electronic files containing the document. This video reviews metadata in documents and ethical obligations therein.
