Managing A Chaotic Workload - What Is Time

What is time? On one hand it is a factual, logical, linear issue. But in our daily lives it’s one of the most emotional issues that we face daily.

When you think about time what do you generally think or say? How do people talk to one another about time? If you think about it, most people almost always say they don’t have enough of it, they are running out of it, they are running late, or something is not going to get done because of the time involved. The moment those thoughts happen they kick off a chaos response, or the stress response, in our mind. Sometimes the response is minimal but sometimes it affects you very strongly and deeply. The dangerous part is even when it’s a minimal response it starts the three-step cycle of attention, attraction and attitude. The more we continually focus on one thing we naturally draw more attention to it but what we’ve really done is draw attention to the fact that we don’t have enough time. We begin to look for evidence that things aren’t going to get done, or that we’re going to be late, which lends itself to our attitude. Most attitudes don’t improve when you are in that state. People rush, multitask, behavior changes, etc. … which starts the cycle all over again. How do you stop the cycle?
